Water and Climate Change: Impacts and Adaptation
Main Topics
Hydrology in a Changing Environment
Climate change is profoundly impacting the hydrological cycle, with cascading effects on water resources, ecosystems, and human livelihoods. In northern regions, the accelerated melting of glaciers and snowpack intensifies changes in river-flow and groundwater recharge. Additionally, changes in rainfall and evapotranspiration can contribute to more frequent and severe flooding and/or droughts, creating complex challenges for water management and ecosystem stability. This conference will explore recent and projected changes, as well as models, methodologies, and basic research across the diverse disciplines of the hydrological cycle, including:
- Glaciers: Ice Today, Water Tomorrow
- Rivers and Lakes: Nature’s waterways, shaping life and land
- Floods and Droughts: Nature's Extremes in a Warming World
- Groundwater: The Hidden Source that Keeps Us Flowing
- Ecology: Bridging Water and Life for a Balanced Future
Adapting Water Management to a Changing Climate
Adapting to climate change is essential for sustainable water management. Key adaptation strategies include enhancing water management practices, implementing nature-based solutions, and investing in resilient infrastructure. However, these efforts often face challenges, including resource limitations, political barriers, and the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to effectively manage complex hydrological patterns and their social and environmental implications. We invite you to submit papers on the following topics:
Nature/Climate-Based Planning, Policy, and Management
Green Engineering: Nature-based solutions in urban areas, agriculture, forestry, mining, aquaculture, and more
Hard Engineering Strategies: Infrastructure development for hydropower, transport, utilities, and other systems
Risk Assessment, Mitigation Measures, and Management Effectiveness
