Afternoon Excursion

Thursday, June 5, 2025 from 12:30 – 20:00

Join us for an unforgettable afternoon excursion, which we start at the heart of Iceland’s renewable energy innovation. At the Nesjavellir Geothermal Power Plant, one of the largest geothermal facilities in Iceland, discover how the island nation harnesses Earth’s natural heat to produce electricity and hot water sustainably. Set amidst the striking geothermal landscapes near Hengill Volcano, this site offers both educational insights and breathtaking scenery.

We will then visit the historic Ljósafoss Hydropower Station, a testament to Iceland’s pioneering efforts in renewable energy. Opened in the 1930s, this facility combines functionality with interactive exhibits that bring the science of hydropower to life. Learn how Iceland has tapped into its abundant natural resources to become a global leader in sustainable energy production.

Finally, we will immerse ourselves in the captivating blend of history, geology, and ecology at Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This iconic location holds profound cultural significance as the site of the world’s first parliament while also showcasing the extraordinary natural wonders of the Mid-Atlantic Rift, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Stroll through a landscape shaped by millennia of geological activity and explore the park’s rich biodiversity, set against the backdrop of Iceland’s largest natural lake, Þingvallavatn.

The tour should be suitable for most people and walking distances are relatively short.

Warm, waterproof clothing, and good shoes are needed but hiking boots are not necessary.

Afternoon refreshment included.
